I’m lying here in bed and tapping at my laptop, observing the others that share this room at work with me. I’ve barely slept an hour last night. And in the period of typing this post, it’s overwhelming to just think about what else is happening in the world right now.
2 days ago, a possible IED (Improvised Explosive Device) was detected at the customs clearance of Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 1. An alert CISCO officer detected the IED when it was being put through an X-ray Machine. The flight is from Cathay Pacific. The aircraft was inbound from an unknown destination. I haven’t been reading the news, (I’m trying to keep a low information diet.) apparently, the word that got out was that it was a Silk Air flight. There are alot of articles on “Bomb threat grounds SilkAir MI 541 from Cebu to Singapore” and it often lists Cebu. That is a separate incident.
I suppose the bomb incident with Cathay Pacific was kept hush by the authorities, just as how NUS and LKY Faculty of Public Policy kept hush (I presume.) about Zanetta Joan Sit, of Deal or No Deal Season 2 fame, in the spirit of “Let’s Not Destroy a Young and Promising Lawyer“.
Though I am no expatriate and having lived in Singapore for the past 25 (oh, 25!) years, I have observed the disparity of some of the great decisions made by the best brains in Singapore. If you run a search on Zanetta Joan Sit, I guess it’s easy to notice the factions of “Tammy Sympathizers” and “Friends of Zanetta”.
“Victim of Camwhoring”
- JESSICA LIM, The Straits Times 21st July 2009
“Tammy Sympathizers” don’t see why should Zanetta’s name not be put up everywhere, with strategically censored pictures. Why does Tammy get her face all over local media and worse of all, she gets named (Tammy NYP? Just how many Tammys are there in NYP in the past 5 years?)? While Zanetta Joan Sit recently appeared on the papers, after a month or 2 of doing rounds on the Internet? There is a population of “Friends of Zanetta” blogging and putting up comments all over the place with statements like “Give Zanetta a chance.” or “It’s unfortunate that it happened.” or “Don’t ruin a future lawyer.” I think that is a desperate attempt to bring things under control. Ever since the introduction of the Internet, nothing’s ever really secure.
Oh wells, nobody really cares about Tammy then, I still remember my mother asking about the “Tammy Furore“, saying people in the streets are spreading the videos via Bluetooth (Thanks Singtel for bringing in Next Generation Mobile Communications Devices.). Nobody cares about Tammy now too, she has moved on and still is happy with her co-starring boyfriend.
The greatest lesson for a “Lawyer to Be” is to move on despite mistakes. Or as how most lawyers earn their keep – play the blame game. Zanetta may prove to be a stronger person if she deals (no pun intended.) with the issue, matter of factly. Somehow I have a feeling her favourite accessory right now is a pair of shades, I don’t know where I’ve got that feeling from. Intuition, maybe.
I am disappointed with the disparity that can be experienced at where I’m from. I know this world can never be perfect.
And I quote “How I Met Your Mother.”
“This world needs people – people who appear bold and daring, ready to take on the world for what’s right but don’t do anything. When you actually do something, you get picked on. (Al Gore, I’m sure you’ve heard me.)”
- BARNEY STINSON, How I Met Your Mother.
